The Arango: 14 and 15 generations

Starting with Mr. Domingo Antonio de Arango y Valdés and his wife Ms. Olaya de Zafra Castrillón, who originated the surname Arango in Colombia and whom we will count as generation 1, 14 generations have been registered as follows:

1. Domingo Antonio de Arango y Valdés, born around 1635 in Villagonzay, San Martín de Arango, Asturias, Spain. He died on December 2, 1677 in Rionegro (Antioquia), at the age of 42. His remains rest in the Church of San Nicolás de Rionegro. He married in 1660 in the Aburrá Valley, with Mrs. Olaya de Zafra Castrillón who had been born in Arma Vieja, Caldas department.

2. Esteban Arango Zafra, Ensign, born in 1670 in Medellín. He died in Medellín. He married on December 19, 1694 in the Aburrá Valley, with Gertrudis Vélez de Rivero Toro, who had been born in 1674

3.  José Eugenio Arango Vélez was born in 1697 in Rionegro, he died in Rionegro. He married on May 1, 1715, with María del Carmen Echeverri Echagüe, who was born in 1702

4. Cristobal Arango Echeverri. He was born in 1720 in Rionegro, He died in Medellín. Cristobal married Lorenza Francisca del Carmen Angel y Uribe, who had been born in 1724 in Medellín.

5. Pedro Pablo Arango Angel. He was born around 1754 in Medellín. He died on December 4, 1836 in La Ceja, Antioquia. From Mr. Pedro Pablo Arango Angel, the two branches of Arango that concern us originated: both Cecilia and I, Bernardo, have doubly the surname Arango, our parents are respectively: Arturo Mejía Arango and Elvia Arango Duque; Luis Abel Arango Gómez and Ana Rita Mejía Arango.

The two branches of the Arango that concern us originated from Don Pedro Pablo Arango Angel, who married twice: He married on February 14, 1779 in Rionegro, Antioquia, with Mrs. María Josefa Botero Echeverri, born on February 17, June 1764 in Medellín. From this marriage originated the surname Arango de Arturo and Ana Rita Mejía Arango, who descend from Esteban Arango Botero

Pedro Pablo Arango Arango Angel married Josefa Dolores Restrepo Uribe and from there the Arangos of our parents Arturo and Ana Rita Mejía Arango originate.

In a second marriage, Mr. Pedro Pablo Arango Angel married Mrs. Cipriana Montoya Mejía and from that marriage came the Arangos of Luis Abel Arango Gómez and Elvia Arango Duque.

Diagram to follow up on our two Arango families (that of Arturo Mejía Arango and his sister Ana Rita; that of Elvia Arango Duque and her middle brother Luis Abel Arango Gómez), from Don Domingo Antonio de Arango y Valdés, who brought the surname to Colombia.

We will continue first along the line of Arturo Mejía Arango and Ana Rita Mejía Arango.

6. Esteban Arango Botero. No birth data is available. Esteban was married on February 9, 1807 in Rionegro, Antioquia, with Mrs. Josefa Dolores Restrepo Uribe, who had been born on October 4, 1788 in Rionegro

7. José Joaquín Arango Restrepo. He was born on April 15, 1809 in Rionegro. He married on June 23, 1827 in Manizales, Caldas, with Mrs. Eulalia Palacio Restrepo.

José Joaquín Arango Restrepo was one of the members of the group of 20 people who founded Manizales. Starting with José Joaquín, the history of the family is linked to Manizales and the north of the department of Caldas, which was the south of the department of Antioquia at another time.

8. Francisco Arango Palacio. No birth data is available. He married Dona Bernardina Jaramillo Palacio.

9. Francisco Arango Jaramillo. No birth data is available. He married María Rita Jaramillo Palacio.

10. Cecilia Arango Jaramillo. He was born on November 11, 1898 in Manizales. He died on April 24, 1948 in Tuluá, Valle del Cauca. She married Bernardo Mejía Restrepo.

11. Bernardo and Cecilia were the parents of Ana Rita (Mother of Cecilia Arango Mejía), Arturo (Father of Bernardo Mejía Arango), José Valentín and Jaime.

In this way, the history of the Mejia Arango and Arango Mejía families, in relation to the descendants of José Eugenio Arango Vélez (grandson of Don Domingo Antonio de Arango y Valdés, who brought the surname Arango to Colombia) is linked to cities such as Medellín , Rionegro and Manizales.

12. We, Bernardo Mejía Arango and Cecilia Arango Mejía and our brothers, are generation 12

13. Our children (Jorge Mario Mejía Zúñiga and Andrés Arango Henao Arango) are generation 13.

Their children are the 14th generation since Don Domingo Antonio de Arango y Valdés brought his surname to Colombia.

We will now follow the line of Elvia Arango Duque and Luis bel Arango Gómez: we resume the descent in Pedro Pablo Arango Angel, who is the fifth generation

5. Pedro Pablo Arango Angel, married in second nuptials with Mrs. Cipriana Montoya Mejía.

6. Lucio Francisco Arango Montoya, married Mercedes Botero Jaramillo

7. Avelino Arango Botero, married Mercedes Ruiz Echeverri

8. Pedro Arango Ruiz, married Rosa Luisa Ruiz Botero. This marriage is the one that appears in the book Genealogías de Salamina (By Guillermo Duque Botero), probably as the first Arango of this line of our family who settled there.

9. Jesús María Arango Ruiz, married Ana Joaquina Gómez Alzate Duque

10. Joaquín Arango Gómez, who married Sara Mejía Toro (Sister of our other great-grandfather Valentín Mejía Toro)

11. Jesús María Arango Mejía, who married Pastora Gómez Vélez in his first marriage, and they were the parents of Luis Abel Arango Gómez (Father of Cecilia Arango Mejía). Jesús María Arango Mejía married in a second marriage with Ms. Delfina Duque Gómez and they were the parents of Elvia Arango Duque (mother of Bernardo Mejía Arango).

12. Elvia Arango Duque and Luis Abel Arango Gómez, our parents, are generation 12. Elvia Arango Duque married Arturo Mejía Arango, parents of Bernardo Mejía Arango, who is from generation 13

Luis Abel Arango Gómez married Ana Rita Mejía Arango, parents of Cecilia Arango Mejía, who is also generation number 13

Our children, Jorge Mario Mejía Zúñiga and Andrés Henao Arango, are the 14th generation and their children will be the 15th generation, since the arrival of Don Domingo Antonio de Arango y Valdéz, who brought the surname Arango to Colombia, about 354 years ago.
